Hello, West Geauga families,

My name is Dr. Jehoshaphat K. Jones, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the West Geauga Board of Education. As a proud father of six children currently attending West Geauga schools, a former educator and technology specialist, and a passionate advocate for bridging the gaps between families and schools, I bring both personal and professional experience to this role. My children are active in sports and extracurricular activities, and I have witnessed firsthand the impact that strong schools and engaged families can have on a child's success. Together, we can build upon our district's achievements and create a brighter future for every student by focusing on three key areas: strengthening family engagement, connecting students to meaningful extracurricular opportunities, and ensuring they are prepared for the best possible futures post-high school.

1. Building a Stronger Family Engagement Environment

Family involvement is crucial to student success. As someone who has developed family engagement programs to bridge the gap between families and schools, I understand the importance of fostering a collaborative environment. My plan includes:

  • Improving Communication: I will advocate for clear, consistent updates through newsletters, interactive apps, and parent-teacher forums, ensuring families stay informed and involved.

  • Empowering Families: I will support workshops and resources that help families assist their children, from homework strategies to college preparation.

  • Creating Inclusive Opportunities: Organizing family nights, cultural celebrations, and volunteer events will bring our community closer together, fostering partnerships that directly benefit students.

As a father deeply invested in this district, I want every family to feel connected and every parent to have the tools they need to help their children thrive.

2. Connecting Students to Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities are essential for student growth and success. My own children's involvement in sports has shown me the power of teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. I will focus on:

  • Eliminating Barriers: I will work to remove financial and logistical obstacles, ensuring every student has access to the activities that inspire them.

  • Expanding Offerings: I will support programs like robotics, performing arts, and environmental clubs to give students opportunities in emerging fields.

  • Engaging the Community: Partnerships with local businesses and organizations can provide mentorship, sponsorship, and real-world connections for our students.

Every child deserves the chance to discover their passions and grow outside the classroom, and I will work tirelessly to ensure those opportunities are available.

3. Sending Students to the Best Opportunities Post High School

I have had the privilege of seeing my own children achieve success beyond high school—one attends Cornell University, and another is a nuclear engineer. This personal experience drives my commitment to helping every West Geauga student achieve their dreams. My plan includes:

  • Personalized Career and College Readiness: I will advocate for comprehensive counseling to help students explore their options, apply for scholarships, and prepare for their futures.

  • Dual Credit and Certification Programs: I will push for expanded partnerships with colleges and vocational schools so students can graduate with skills and credentials that set them apart.

  • Building Alumni Connections: Let's create a mentorship network of successful West Geauga graduates to inspire and guide our current students.

Whether students choose college, vocational training, or immediate employment, I am committed to helping them find the best path to success.

Why I’m Running

As a former educator and technology specialist, I bring years of experience in education and innovation to this role. I have worked to develop family engagement programs that empower parents and build bridges between schools and communities. As a father of six children in West Geauga schools, I understand the needs of our students and families personally. From cheering on my kids at their sports events to celebrating their academic and career milestones, I know the importance of a school system that nurtures both potential and passion.

West Geauga local schools have a strong foundation, as evidenced by our district's recent achievements. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce released its annual District Report Cards, ranking West Geauga 10th in the Performance Index for the third straight year and awarding another Five Star Rating, the highest possible. Additionally, 90% of West Geauga students scored Proficient or higher on at least one test, with 44% achieving Advanced, the highest achievement level.

Building upon these accomplishments, I believe we can achieve even greater success by working together. With your support, I will bring my dedication, experience, and vision to the Board of Education to ensure our schools continue to be a place where every child can thrive.
